ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DIABLO

This photograph was taken in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone in February, where winter hangs heavy and the silence feels ancient. I was standing in a three-foot snowdrift, barely able to move, focused on two older male buffalo, their age, I’d been told, written in the wear of their horns: somewhere between ten and thirteen years. I expected only distant shots. They were about 150 yards away, grazing calmly on the sparse threads of vegetation rising through the snow. Then, without warning, their attention shifted— and suddenly, they turned toward me. My guide told me not to move. The bulls’ slow wander became a steady walk, then their walk became a rising trot. Their massive forms closing the distance with a power that makes you understand why the prairie once trembled beneath them. Anxious, I tried to shift, but the snow held me fast. I fumbled to switch lenses—from a long zoom to a modest 28–70—hands shaking as the two giants kept coming, until they suddenly stopped about thirty feet away from me. Why they paused, I cannot say. Perhaps curiosity, perhaps mercy. But whatever the reason, I’ve been eternally grateful. It became the opportunity of a lifetime, a moment etched into memory not only because I captured the shot— but because I was able to walk away. RRB
